AI is making a big impact in business, education, medicine, and more. But when will it reach a breakthrough that will transform how we live? In an edited interview, three of the world’s leading AI thinkers—Suleyman Ali, Founder and CEO at Cohere; Aidan Gomez, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Meta; and Yann LeCun, Chief AI Scientist at Meta—share their thoughts on when they will know we have reached a true AI breakthrough.
Traditional artificial intelligence, or AI, uses programmed rules and algorithms to interpret data. It’s known for its precision and efficiency when performing repetitive tasks, but it can be prone to bias or discrimination based on the data sets it was trained on.
In contrast, generative AI creates new content—such as text, images, music, or software code—in response to a prompt. It’s known for its creativity and adaptability, and it’s used in a variety of industries, from music and design to marketing and medical diagnosis.
In 2025, generative AI is helping creators push boundaries and explore new modes of expression. Across industries, AI tools are becoming more than just grammar checkers—they’re collaborating with creators to co-write articles and stories, provide research summaries, and even generate voiceovers with emotional modulation. Meanwhile, in the education sector, AI tools are personalized and adaptive, enabling educators to tailor curriculum, assessments, and student engagement for each individual. And in the field of climate change, AI is helping researchers and policymakers predict and forecast climate scenarios with greater accuracy.
