The creation of these institutions has contributed to peace and prosperity in the world, promoting the rights of individuals and nations to self-determination, economic opportunity and social justice.
During decolonization, newly independent countries often sought alliances with the United States or Soviet Union to establish their legitimacy on the world stage and assert their own interests. Non-alignment was also a strategy for many independent nations during the Cold War as they sought to avoid entanglement in superpower conflicts.
