The globalization of society, economy and culture, as well as the rise of international organizations like the United Nations, have influenced world politics. The creation of these institutions has contributed to peace and prosperity in the world, promoting the rights of individuals and nations to self-determination, economic opportunity and social justice.
During decolonization, newly independent countries often sought alliances with the United States or Soviet Union to establish their legitimacy on the world stage and assert their own interests. Non-alignment was also a strategy for many independent nations during the Cold War as they sought to avoid entanglement in superpower conflicts.
The major in global affairs focuses on the global processes that affect all societies, and provides a strong knowledge base across disciplines. You’ll take core courses that examine the political, cultural, and economic factors that shape global affairs. You’ll then choose a thematic and geographic concentration, and develop competency in a contemporary second language and culture. Through your coursework and experiential learning, you’ll be prepared to become a global changemaker in government, public policy, and international business.
